Ashiko’s have origins ranging from Ghana to Nigeria, it’s shape is usually longer and tapers like a cone, similar drum types are found through out Africa, each vary with unique qualities. Ashiko is a Yoruba word that means time and refers to a type of music and culture dating back to the early 20th century. Motherland’s ashikos are carved in both Ghana and Nigeria. The Ghana type works well as a hand drum, the Nigerian type are usually played in sets with sticks. The drums are fixed with either goat or cow skin for durable and great sound.
