It was, now it is. Rawhide, a dried natural animal skin is a traditional material used for drum making. The most commonly used one on many drumming cultures are goat hide and cow hide (bovine). They are domesticated animals and used as a food source, the hides are readily available and have a range of tonal qualities that work well for drums.
