Description
The Nigerian “shekere” is the mother of all shakers, or at least is has influenced the sound or the construction of many current percussion shakers, and the shaker feel of many music genres. Motherland shekeres are made from carefully selected and prepared Nigerian grown gourds, then a net of cowry shells are made to cover it. Selecting the gourds takes some consideration for best sound and playability. Thin, strong and hard shelled gourds are the best, they are light weight to hold and play, and have a lively responsive sound.
