Ewe Drums – Traditional type of drum ensemble played by Ewe culture on and around Ghana-Togo border. The drums are carved from a solid piece of wood and use deer hide for drum skins, the hides are fastened to the wood shell with lacing anchored to adjustable wood pegs that allow for tuning. The Ewe drum ensemble consists of a number of differently sized, shaped and sounding drums which when played with accessory instruments including iron bell and gourd shaker constitute a drum orchestra. Ewe drumming has garnered a reputation with many musicologists for its highly developed polyrhythmic sound.
