The udu is a hollow vessel, typically a ceramic pot and played with either the hands or a paddle-shaped striker. The word udu is from the Ibo language, there is a tradition of this type of musical instrument in their music. We have available this type as well as other ones. Small and medium-sized udu usually have two holes, larger size ones have one hole. One hole is slapped while the other hole is cupped with varying degrees of pressure to change the sound. Single hole udus have one pitch, the opening is struck with a foam paddle which creates a constant bass rhythm.
