A tisket a tasket…
We have three West Africa caxixi type shakers; Northern Ghana, Southern Benin, and South Central Nigeria. All are handwoven cane basket-type shakers with seeds or stone pebbles inside with a hard gourd piece bottom, each type has their own unique sound quality or language, so to speak. The caxixi can be played one or more in each hand or singly depending on sound desired, They can produce a range of sounds from a raining downpour to harsh and raspy rattletrap sound depending on size, fill material, and the density or thickness of the gourd bottom. Caxixis add an authentic liveliness to so many types of music, imagine a percussionist without their caxixis, it’s like a drum set player without a high-hat. Pronounced: ka-SHE-she from the Brazilian word caxixi. One word of advice to all ka-She-she aficionados, we recommend buying as many caxixis as you can fit into one basket. One caxixi, two caxixi, three caxixi, now we’re shakin’!
