One of the best reasons for buying protective covering for a drum is to help keep it sounding good. A natural skin drum head is susceptible to absorbing air moisture, this softens and make it stretch and the pitch goes down. To help keep your drum sounding consistently the same cover the head when exposed to varying humidity. A full bag is the best way but a simple drum hat works great too.
